Orthopaedic Implants: A blessing in the contemporary medical world

An implant is a medical device that is manufactured to replace a missing biological structure, to support a damaged biological structure, or enhance an existing biological structure. Medical implants are man-made devices, in contrast to a transplant, which is a transplanted biomedical tissue. The surface of implants that contact the body might be made of a biomedical material such as titanium or silicone depending on what is the most functional. In some cases implants contain electronics e.g. artificial pacemaker In orthopaedics, implants may refer to devices that are placed over or within the bones to hold a fracture reduction while prosthesis would be the more appropriate term for devices that replace a part or whole of a defunct joint.

There are many types of orthopaedic implants and each one is designed to correct the affected joint so that it withstands the associated movement and stress and to enhance mobility and decrease pain. Some of the many kinds of orthopaedic implants include:
  • Nails, Wires & Pins
  • Hip Prosthesis
  • Spine Surgery
  • External Fixators
  • Reconstruction System etc.
Orthopaedic implants serve as a blessing in today’s contemporary medical world, as it can cure all bone dislocations, replacements etc. but it requires further advancement in technology to reduce the pain and trauma for the patient.
